Compression and the difference in its values between cylinders shows the degree of engine wear. It is better to measure compression at a service station.

Determining the degree of engine wear by compression

Engine
Compression, MPa
New engine
Wear limit
Maximum permissible difference in values in cylinders
Petrol 1.0 l, 37 kW and 1.4 l, 50 kW
not less than 1.2
0,75
no more than 0.3
Diesel 1.9 l, 74 kW
2,5 – 3,1
1,9
no more than 0.5

1. Remove the upper engine cover (see subsection 2.1).

1. Remove the upper engine cover (see subsection…

2. For 1.0 l, 37 kW and 1.4 l, 50 kW petrol engines, disconnect connector 1 with wires from ignition module 2, unscrew the spark plugs (see subsection 10.3.3) and remove fuse #35 from the fuse box.

3. For a 1.9 L, 74 kW diesel engine, disconnect the unit injector wiring harness connector from the wiring harness, remove the glow plugs and screw in a special adapter instead of the glow plugs.

4. Connect a compression gauge.

5. Turn the engine over with the starter until the pressure on the instrument scale stabilizes. In this case, for a gasoline engine, you need to press the accelerator pedal all the way down.

6. Similarly, check the compression in the remaining cylinders.

7. Disconnect the compression gauge and install all removed parts.

8. Clear the engine control unit fault memory.
