Pumping fuel out of a vacuum pump

Vacuum pump

The vacuum pump on the 1.9 l, 74 kW diesel engine is also the fuel pump.

It is mounted on top, at the rear end of the engine and is driven by the camshaft. Pump gaskets are disposable, so they must be replaced each time the pump is removed.

1.Disconnect from fuel filter 7 (see figureFuel filter for a 1.9L, 74kW diesel engine vehicle) drain hoses 1 (blue marking) and serve 2 (white marking) fuel.

2. Pump the fuel out of the vacuum pump. To do this, connect a VAG 1390 hand vacuum pump with a VAG 1390/1 tank to the pump. Pump out the fuel until it stops flowing out of hose 2 (see the figure Pumping fuel from the vacuum pump). When doing this, be careful that no fuel gets into the hand vacuum pump.

3. Disconnect from pump 3 (see the picture Vacuum pump) vacuum hose 1 brake booster.

4. Disconnect fuel supply hose 5 from pump 3.

5. Unscrew the 2 pump mounting bolts.

6. Remove vacuum pump 3 from the cylinder head and, lifting it upwards, disconnect fuel drain hose 4 from it.

7. Connect fuel drain hose 4 to the pump (blue marking) and install pump 3 on the cylinder head.

8. Screw in the 2 pump mounting bolts and tighten the two upper bolts to a torque of 20 Nm, the two lower bolts to 10 Nm.

9. Connect fuel supply hose 5 to the pump (white marking) and vacuum hose 1.

10. Connect hose 1 (see the figure Pumping fuel from the vacuum pump) fuel supply (white marking) to the fuel filter.

11. Bleed the vacuum pump. To do this, connect a hand vacuum pump with a tank to hose 2 of the fuel drain (blue marking). Pump the vacuum pump until fuel starts to flow out of hose 2, which indicates that the vacuum pump is filled with fuel.

12. Connect fuel drain hose 2 to the fuel filter.
