Remove the engine cover.

Important: If you disconnect and then reconnect the wire that connects the battery terminal to the vehicle ground (body), you will need to perform some additional work. All cable glands that were loosened or cut during removal must be re-fastened in the same place during reinstallation.

With the ignition off, disconnect the wire connecting the battery terminal to the ground (body) of the vehicle. Disconnect the plug connector from the automatic transmission control unit "J217". Remove the battery and battery holder. Remove the air intake sleeve. Move the preselector lever to position "P". Using a lever motion, press the cable tightening of the preselector lever "2" away from the gearshift control shaft lever, e.g. using a 1-mm open-end wrench, press the tabs on the preselector lever cable tensioner support and pull the preselector lever cable tensioner out of the support on the gearbox. Disconnect plug connector "3". Unscrew the preselector lever cable tightening support from the gearbox.

Unscrew the ground wire (housing) "3". Disconnect the electrical wires "1" and "2" on the starter and release them. Label the ATF cooler hoses according to the ATF cooler to avoid confusion during reinstallation.

Important: Depending on the design condition, there is a plastic tube located on the ATF cooler inlet part that must be reinstalled during installation.

Disconnect plug connectors "1" and "2" on the automatic transmission. Unscrew the electrical wire holder from the gearbox. Attach the holder with electrical wires to the front. Remove the starter. Remove the front part of the exhaust pipe.

Disconnect plug connectors «1» and «2» on the…

Unscrew screws "1". Unscrew the "arrow" connecting rod stabilizer "2".

Unscrew screws «1». Unscrew the «arrow»…

Fold back the shock absorber strut, while pushing the driveshaft out of the wheel mount using the T10161 wedge. Repeat the procedure on the other side of the car. Fold back the wheel bearing cover and at the same time insert the driveshaft into the wheel well and attach it with wire to the shock absorber strut. Secure the right propeller shaft as high as possible. Be careful not to damage the paintwork on the drive shaft.

Unscrew the swing support "arrow".

Unscrew the swing support «arrow».

Having pulled out the clamp "3" as far as it will go, disconnect the hose with the drain cock from the radiator (fasten the hose, for example. wire so that it does not interfere during further removal of the gearbox). Disconnect the plug connector "2".

Important: Unscrew the air conditioner pipe holder (if available in the equipment) from the fan bracket.

Important: Unscrew the air conditioner pipe…

After unscrewing the "arrow" screws, remove the fan holder in a downward direction.

After unscrewing the «arrow» screws, remove the…

Remove the cap from the converter nut hole. Unscrew the 6 "arrow" nuts of the torque converter. To do this, you should turn the crankshaft by 60° each time.

Important: If all 6 torque converter nuts are not removed, the converter will come off when the gearbox is removed from the engine.

Lower the engine/gearbox unit through the lead screw approx. by 50 mm.

Lower the engine/gearbox unit through the lead…

Place the gearbox mounting device "3282" on the engine and gearbox removal and installation device "VAG 1383 A". Place the mounting plate -3282/36- on the gearbox mounting device "3282".

Align the transmission mount arm with the holes in the mounting plate. Screw in the fastening elements according to the marks on the mounting plate. Place the VAG 1383 A engine and gearbox removal and installation device under the vehicle; the arrow symbol on the mounting plate indicates the direction of vehicle travel. Align the mounting plate parallel to the gearbox. Secure the gearbox to the gearbox mounting fixture "3282" with a screw.

Align the transmission mount arm with the holes…

Support the gearbox by lifting the gearbox mounting fixture from underneath. Remove the remaining bolts connecting the engine and gearbox. Press the gearbox away from the engine, while squeezing the torque converter out of the drive disk. Press the torque converter against the ATF fluid pump "arrow".

Support the gearbox by lifting the gearbox…

Carefully tilt the gearbox towards the suspension mounting beam. Carefully lower the gearbox, directing it downwards near the suspension mounting beam. During lowering, change the position of the gearbox using the lead screws of the "3282" gearbox mounting device. Secure the torque converter from falling out.

Installation

Installation is carried out in the reverse order of actions. In this case, the following instructions must be observed.

Important: During assembly work, self-locking nuts and screws must be replaced. Replace the angle tightening screws, O-rings and seals. Check the presence of centering bushings in the cylinder block for centering the gearbox; if necessary, invest them. Secure all hose connections with hose clamps that match the serial condition. All cable clamps that were loosened or disconnected during removal must be secured in the same place during reinstallation. If you disconnect and then reconnect the wire that connects the battery terminal to the ground (body) of the vehicle, you will need to perform some additional work. Before installing the gearbox, ensure that the torque converter is correctly installed in the gearbox. If the torque converter is installed incorrectly, the converter linkage or the ATF fluid pump will become unusable if the gearbox is flanged to the engine.

Check the ATF fluid level and top it up if necessary. Check the adjusted position of the preselector lever cable and adjust if necessary. Check the coolant level in the cooling system.
