Shock absorber leaks

Minor oil leak (fogging) on the piston rod seal is not a reason to replace the shock absorber. If the oil stain is visible (but it is dull or dried out with dust) and does not extend further from the upper shock absorber lock (piston rod sealing ring) to the lower plate (lining) of the spring "arrow", then the shock absorber is normal.

Minor oil leak (fogging) on the piston rod seal…

Important: A small amount of oil leakage is an advantage because it also lubricates the sealing ring, thereby extending its service life. The above applies to the shock absorbers of the front and rear axles.

Shock absorber noise

It should be warned about this. that in noise complaints, shock absorbers are considered a frequent source of noise. The noise may be caused by: a faulty shock absorber; loose shock absorber mount on the body; faulty thrust ball bearing; poor performance of the shock absorber; faulty outer joint; faulty wheel hub bearing; breakthrough of body welding spots; loosened and, accordingly, over-tightened installed parts (exhaust system, specialized body design, covers, etc.).

Important: In the case of complaints where the noise is described as a knocking or crackling sound, a test run must be carried out with the customer, during which it must be established where, when and how the noise is emitted (preferably on a dry, uneven road).

Checking shock absorbers without gas pressure in the removed state

(Material is available on the website: «SKODABOOK»)

Damaged shock absorbers are noticeable when the vehicle is moving as a knocking sound due to the wheel bouncing, especially on poor roads, and must be replaced. The main reason for failure is oil leakage. The shock absorber can be compressed or extended abruptly, with jerks. Before the shock absorber starts to work, it exhibits "free play".

Important: Shock absorbers do not require maintenance. The shock absorber fluid cannot be topped up.

Checking gas-filled shock absorbers in the removed state

Damaged gas-filled shock absorbers also manifest themselves as a loud knocking noise due to wheel bouncing and, externally, usually a significant oil leak. As a result of the manual inspection, it is possible to determine in the following manner whether the shock absorber is damaged or not. Compress the shock absorber with your hand. In this case, it is possible to move the piston rod throughout its entire stroke with uniform resistance and without jerking. Release the piston rod. If the shock absorbers have sufficient gas pressure, the piston rod returns to its original position on its own. If this is not the case, this does not mean that it is absolutely necessary to replace the shock absorber, since it will continue to act as a normal shock absorber.

Important: The shock absorbing effect is also ensured without sufficient gas pressure, provided that there has been no significant leakage of shock absorber fluid. However, it is possible that the noise level will increase. On used (older) vehicles, the shock absorber can still be used without problems even after gas pressure has been lost. Sufficient gas pressure in the shock absorber helps reduce the noise level of its movement and improve its performance when driving on bad roads.
